Science Masterclass
Year 7 were fortunate enough to receive a visit from Dr Liz Jenkinson in one of their Science lessons in November.
Dr Jenkinson is the Chief Technical Officer at Green Biologics which is a company that produces bio-based renewable chemicals that are used in a wide range of consumer and industrial applications. She talked to the boys about the role of bacteria in producing renewable chemicals. Highlights included some hands on activities: looking at the food products provided to help the bacteria grown and the chance to smell some of the chemicals that the bacteria produce, ranging from the refreshing scents of limonene (citrus) and linalool (lavender) to the far less pleasant butyric acid which smelt like a cross between stinky cheese and vomit!
