Purcell’s ‘Fairy Queen’
This year’s Hilary concert was particularly special.
NCS Chamber Choir and Choral Society once again joined forces with the Instruments of Time and Truth, together with five outstanding soloists, to give a performance of Henry Purcell’s fiendishly difficult opera, The Fairy Queen — a retelling of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. We performed from a rarely used edition created for concert performance by Benjamin Britten, Peter Pears, and Imogen Holst. This was a project of epic proportions and great musical complexity; the singers and instrumentalists had to work particularly hard in the performance; but it came off very well indeed. All the performers, but most especially the boys, should be extremely proud of what they achieved! This concert concluded a trio of Purcell operas performed by NCS in recent years: the previous concerts were Dido and Aeneas (2019) and King Arthur (2020).
