SHTEAM Festival
2020 saw NCS celebrating our first ever SHTEAM festival celebrating the connections between Science, Humanities, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths.
The theme was sound and noise and we welcomed a number of speakers and workshops throughout the week. Each day there was an assembly to coincide with the theme and all teachers incorporated an aspect of sound and noise in their lessons. On Monday we were treated to a visit from Science Oxford. They presented a show on the ‘Sound of Science’ to all the boys in Year 3 and upwards. They then ran workshops for the remainder of the day: ‘Super Senses’ with Pre-Prep and ‘Sound of Science’ with Years 3-5. On Tuesday Years 3 and 4 had a fun workshop on music and movement and Years 5 and 6 had a chance to show their dancing skills off on Wednesday. On Wednesday Years 7 and 8 enjoyed workshops on music production techniques and Steve Reich’s Pendulum Music. ‘Full SHTEAM ahead’ to Thursday and we were visited by School of Noise who ran an exciting workshop exploring noise and the science of sound. Other exciting events that took place included talks on how animals use sound by our very own Mrs Williams, and Professor Tom Pizzari from the University of Oxford. Dr Nik Sabharwal came in to demonstrate how ultrasound is used in medicine, and Years 5 and 7 took part in a skype conference on music in film with the Hollywood composer David Norland, live from his LA studio. It was a fantastic week and the boys thoroughly enjoyed the range of activities. Roll on next year!
